provides a fantastic introduction to the benefits of mentoring, the personal
qualities and commitment required, the role of a mentor, the stages of a
mentoring relationship, and communication skills needed for a successful
mentoring experience.

These helpful guidelines from the National Mentoring Partnership can be
used for designing, planning, managing, operating, and evaluating a youth
mentoring program. Slight adaptations will be needed for working with community
college students, but the principles are sound. To implement the elements,

The
Minority Male Mentoring Project: Best Practices Portfolio (Adobe
Acrobat File)
Durham Technical Community College, Johnston Community College, Mitchell
Community College, Piedmont Community College, Southeastern Community College,
and Wayne Community College participated in a project designed to improve
retention, increase graduation by concentrating resources on improving educational
programs, raise academic performance, and provide substance abuse education
for minority male students. This report documents the programs' implementation,
student outcomes, and potential sustainability.

provides training and technical assistance for youth mentoring programs
and initiatives. While this organization is directed towards youth mentorship,
